HOW TO GROW BIRD OF PARADISE :

Step 1
Remove the bright orange aril's from the seeds and  place the seeds into a container. Cover them with  warm water, leave to soak for 24 hours.

Step 2
Prepare pots or seeding tray with a 50/50 mix of propagating sand and seed raising mix. Sow seeds approximately 1cm deep into your prepared medium and moisten with water. It is important that the medium stays moist throughout the germination process, but not wet. You can place plastic kitchen wrap over the top of your pots/tray to retain moisture and humidity levels that are needed if you do not have a greenhouse. Place in a bright location with indirect light. Average germination takes 4-8 weeks in ideal conditions. The soil temperature needs to stay around 25°C/80°F for germination to occur. If you cannot provide these temperatures naturally, you may need to use a heat/propagation mat.

Step 3
Seedlings are safe to gently transplant once they have 2-3 true leaves (not milk/baby leaves).  Continue to use well draining soil and keep in a location with indirect light or partial shade. Young Bird of Paradise leaves can burn in full sun; which they prefer as established plants.

Step 4
Transplant to final position after winter has passed. Bird of Paradise plants are happy in full sun and will cope with partial shade too. Once established, will survive some cold and will not require much watering. If you live in a colder climate you can keep these in pots so that you can move them inside or to another protected spot in winter. Additional water and feeding advised when flowering. Birds of Paradise can take between 2-5 years to fully mature depending on conditions. In the right climate, these will flower several times a year!
