Cape Gooseberry Seeds Organic .
The Cape Gooseberry is a perennial evergreen shrub in temperate to tropical climates, but an annual in colder climates. It is quite quick growing, easy care and can produce fruit in as early as 6 months. They are quite hardy and will cope with light frost and some mild drought. The fruit is tasty with a mixture of sweetness and tart and are orange when ripe. The fruit is encased on the plant in a lantern/bell shaped husk which starts of green and turns a brilliant orange, then brown as it dries out and the fruit becomes ripe.
The fruit is rich in many nutrients including carbohydrates, vitamins A, B & C and notably protein!
Height: up to 95cm (3 feet)
Width: up to 50 cm (2 feet)
The United States and Europe market the berries as Goldenberry, Pichuberry or simply Physalis.
The Cape Gooseberry is not actually a Gooseberry and is instead related to the Tomato!
The Cape Gooseberry is native to Peru and was introduced to England in the late 18th century.
A single Cape Gooseberry plant annually produces around 300 fruits. If the fruit falls off before the husk around it has dried out and the fruit is still green, it will still ripen if left on a windowsill.
