Red Sacred Basil is a perennial herb native to India that grows to 60 cm high and is used in cooking and in spiritual rituals.The dried leaves have also been used to repel insects from grain storage areas. Like its closely-related Holy Basil or Tulsi, the Red Sacred Basil is easy to grow out of winter and make ideal companion plants in the vegetable garden. In its native region, the plant is sacred in Hinduism and is worshipped as the avatar of Lakshmi. The main point of difference with the Red Sacred Basil, is the extra colours including red and purplish that show through the leaves.

Holy Basil is also known as Ocimum santum, tulasi or tulsi.
Holy Basil is native to the Indian subcontinent and is used in many medicinal concoctions.
Dried leaves of Holy Basil are used as an insect repellent.
When eaten raw, Tulsi leaves can have a numbing effect on the tongue. The flavour tends to be a combination of black pepper and cloves.
Holy Basil’s is regarded in Ayurveda as a type of "Elixir of Life" and believed to promote longevity.
