Anise Seeds Organic .
Annual herb that produces white/yellow flowers in summer through to autumn and grows wild in southern regions of Europe. Growing to 50cm, the liquorice-flavoured Anise is widely used in liquors, confectionary, teas and is also used as an essential oil. Cultivated by the Egyptians 4000 years ago, the seeds have long been used as both an aphrodisiac and to increase the production of breast milk. Easy to grow in warm conditions (sown in spring), though it does not like to be transplanted. An excellent companion for coriander, Anise also attracts predators such as wasps that will prey on common garden pests.
Height: Approx 50cm (1-2 feet)
Width: Approx 20 cm (8 inches)
Anise has long been used to produce liquor drinks such as Sambuca, Ouzo and Absinthe.
British steam engineers used to add anise to the bearings so that if a distinct liquorice smell would indicate overheating.
One of the most common reasons for using Anise medicinally in Europe was to reduce flatulence.
A common Roman tradition was to serve a cake called mustaceoe which contained Anise at the end of major festivities. The tradition is supposedly where weddings derive their end of evening cake ceremonies in modern times.
