Sowing Season by Climate:
Cold - Spring to Mid-Summer
Temperate - Mid-Spring to Late Summer
Sub-Tropical - Late Winter to Mid-Autumn
Tropical - All Year except wet season.
NOTE: in sub-tropical to tropical zones grow
in containers so that they can be moved to avoid seasonal rains.
Growing Temperatures: 6-30°C / 42-86°F
Start: In small pots or straight into the garden if weather is warm enough.
Soil: Moist, well draining soil.
Sow: 1/2 cm (1/4 inch) pH: 5.5-7.5
Water: Low. Can withstand drought but add extra during flowering.
Position: Full Sun. Some shade is ok too.
Germination Time: 7-14 days Transplant: 4-6 weeks after germination.
Spacing: Allow 50 cm (20 inches) between seedlings.
Feeding: Not generally necessary.
Companion plants: Fennel is best grown alone unless nearby fruit trees as they attract extra pollinators.
Don't plant with: Beans, Tomatoes, Kohl Rabi, Wormwood, Coriander. The later two actually inhibit Fennel.
Harvest: From seed to bulb is around 12-14 weeks but
the leaves can be harvested from around 8-10 weeks.
