HOW TO GROW PRIDE OF MADEIRA :

Step 1
After the threat of frost has passed sow Echium seeds directly into a garden bed of loosened soil. Sow them onto the surface of the soil and cover very lightly. Echium seeds require light to germinate. Moisten the soil and keep lightly watered until the seeds germinate which should take between 1 and 3 weeks. If sowing into containers to avoid winter temperatures, use a decent sized pot 14cm (5.5 inches) and sow 2-3 seeds in each. Mixing a portion of garden sand through the soil helps with drainage and allows the roots to penetrate with less resistance. Moisten and leave in a bright and sunny position but be sure to keep checking and watering if the soil becomes too dry. In case you have a heat mat the ideal temperature for germinating Echium seeds is between 15-20ºC/59-68ºF.

Step 2
Once Echiums begin to sprout, keep adding minimal water and they will grow quickly. If growing in containers, gradually increase the number of exposed sunlight hours. The bigger your Echium plants are prior to the following winter, the more likely they are to survive through to the next spring.

Step 3
Seedlings can be transplanted when they reach 10cm (4 inches) or when the daytime temperatures outside regularly reach 15ºC/59ºF. When choosing a location for the seedling in colder climates a position in full sun or where they will get at least six hours of sunlight is ideal. Being native to a warm region established Echiums will thrive in full sunshine and not require too much watering.

Step 4
Although they enjoy warmer climates, Echiums are perennials that will withstand cold temperate winters without too much stress. As perennials, it takes until the second growing season to start producing blooms.
