HOW TO GROW CORDYLINE :

Step 1
Sow indoors at any time of the year but Spring and Summer if in pots outdoors as they need warmth and some light to germinate. Surface sow the seeds into a potting mix or a sandy loam mixture. Cover with a further 2-3 mm of soil and moisten with a spray bottle or misting hose to avoid disturbing the seeds. Do not over water this species as they may mould or rot.

Step 2
Place in greenhouse, on a windowsill or in a warm, light location away from full direct sun. In the shade is fine as long as it is not dark. Keep moist during the entire germination period but again not too wet! Ideal temperature for germination is 18-23°C/66-76°F Germination can be slow and ranges normally between 4-12 weeks in ideal conditions.

Step 3
Transplant if necessary (more than one per pot) once they are large enough to handle or at around 4 months if on their own. Cordyline is quite slow growing. Take indoors or protect from cold winds and frost for their first winter. If your Cordyline is staying in a pot - pick a tall pot as these grow a decent size tap root. Final position can be in full sun but in warmer climates it may appreciate some afternoon shade. Be sure that they are not in an area that becomes waterlogged as they will not like this. Wait until winter is over to plant out into the garden. Can be an indoor plant. Reasonably drought and frost tolerant. Great feature plant.

Height: Up to 3-4 metres (9-12 feet)

Width: up to 3 metres (8-10 feet)

Cordyline australis is actually native to New Zealand.

The name Cordyline comes from a similar word in Greek that references to the large tap root or rhizomes, australis comes from Latin and meant 'southern'.

Cordyline australis can recover from fire due to it's large underground rhizome or tap root .. after the fire is over it will start to regenerate!

Cordyline australis is one of New Zealands most highly cultivated plants. It is very popular overseas in cooler, oceanic regions due to it's similarity to Palm trees .. but without the low tolerance for these climates.
