Nordmann Fir Tree Seeds .
HOW TO GROW NORDMANN FIR :
Step 1
Soak seeds for 24 hours in water. Place the seeds into a plastic zip-lock with a small amount of moist (not wet) sandy-like soil. Write the date and place bag into the fridge for 6-8 weeks. Check weekly to make sure the soil is not drying out and re-moisten if necessary. Also check for any seeds that may have begun to sprout, this is not common but can happen occasionally. Sow any sprouts immediately as per step 2.Step 2
Once cold stratification is completed sow each seed approximately 3 mm deep into a well draining soil mix and moisten. Keep soil moist during the entire germination period. Place into a light but shaded area for germination. Ideal temperatures for germination are 16-18°C/60-65°F Average germination begins around 3-6 weeks.Step 3
Keep seedlings in pots for at least the first two growing seasons so they are protected from heavy frost and winds while still fragile. Frost or harsh hot sun can easily kill the young plants so moving them to suit your local conditions will be necessary. Mulch the base for hot summers to give them the best opportunity to survive.Step 4
Transplant to final position once the tree is 30-90 cm's tall during the plants dormant season. The Nordmann Fir will cope with transplanting better at these stages. As they grow more mature, transplanting can be a bit harder on them. Once established, will survive severe cold and not require much watering. Nordmann Firs can take between 20-40 years to reach maturity, but can be ready for harvesting as a Christmas tree as young as 8-10 years old.
