Pear Fruited Gum ( Eucalyptus pyriformis) 50 Seeds
A small, straggly mallee habit eucalypt with spectacular red or cream flowers in winter to spring that attract birds and other nectar feeders. The flowers are encased in contrasting silvery ribbed caps, and can be used as cut flowers. The smooth bark is grey or pinkish and sheds in ribbons. Moderately drought and frost tolerant. Suits light or heavier clay soils.
Known for its large, pendulous buds and spectacular coloured flowers.
Native to the western part of the northern Western Australian but does ok in my dry garden in NSW, ideally needing a bit of extra water in drought, in the North West Slopes and Plains of NSW (annual rainfall 200-600mm)
It has smooth, grey or salmon-pink bark often shedding in ribbons at the base.
Drought hardy and very ornamental. I never water it. Hardy to frosts (to -5°C at least). Fast growing.
A good tree choice for a garden.
For most seeds (unless otherwise stated): Sow Spring – Lightly cover and keep moist until germination – best to do in the hot before a rain event. Grow seedling over the spring/summer in shade house with ideal conditions, then plant out autumn with occasional watering for the first 2 years.
Care and propagation notes included.
