Red Hummingbird Tree Seeds . 

 

HOW TO GROW HUMMINGBIRD TREES :


Step 1
Place seeds into a plastic bag with some moist peat and/or sand. Label it with the date and place into the fridge for 4 weeks. 

Step 2
Sow each seed roughly 2cm deep into a soil mixture of peat and sand. Soil may include any of peat moss, vermiculite or perlite. Small or medium pots are preferred. Cover seeds lightly and moisten the tray. Allow 4-5 weeks to see seedlings sprout.

Step 3
Transplant when plants reach 10-15cm in height. Move to part-sun position but away from frost. Water regularly during first summer. 

Step 4
The final resting position can be full or part sun. Keep base mulched at the base for winter. Once established requires little water except for when flowering. Hummingbird Trees take 2-3 years to begin flowering.

Hummingbird Trees are grown in tropical regions mainly as an ornamental but has a wide variety of uses.

The tender leaves, green fruit and flowers are eaten alone as a vegetable or mixed into curries or salads. 

The Hummingbird Tree is indigenous from Malaysia to Northern Australia, and is cultivated in many parts of India and Sri Lanka. It has many traditional uses.
