True Indigo is native to India. Indigofera tinctoria was found on the remains of an Egyptian mummy dating back to 2300 BC and the species has also been found in Inca tombs!
Indigo was often used in easel painting in Europe during the Middle Ages.
Marco Polo during the 13th century was the first to report on the preparation of indigo in India.
