Save the Bees Foundation

The My Seeds Save the Bees Foundation is all about raising awareness of the dangers of diminishing Bee populations. So how do we stop this from happening?

In June 2022, varroa mite was first detected in NSW in sentinel hives during routine surveillance by NSW Bee Biosecurity Officers at the Port of Newcastle. A national response to manage the biosecurity risk and spread, and protect the agricultural industry followed. In September 2023, it was agreed that it was not technically feasible to eradicate varroa mite.

As this mite has only recently landed in Aussie shores one may not think that the mites effect is not too wide spread. However, in many other countries this mite has wreaked havoc & stands to eradicate the bee population in Australia by up to 40%.

So what can we do to help?

One word > Educate.

Tell me people about the dangers.

After conferring with a local Bee Keeper who sells  organic Honey, they informed me of their method of getting rid of this mite by covering their hives with a special cover that will eliminate & kill potential mites.

Chemical treatment is also a suggested use, however in a world of chemicals we should only use this as a means if totally necessary.

"We endeavour to raise awareness through Australia by educating and eventually setting aside donations through incentives to help in the protection of this sacred species."

Did you Know?

My Seeds are proud protectors of the Australian Bee.

We endeavour to cultivate & increase the population of Bees, so with each purchase from our store we send (FREE) a small packet of "Save the BEES" seed mix.

With the popularity of our online store growing & growing, we endeavour to have given out more than 20,000 packs that will help kick things along in the want for more bees in the country.

Honey bees are the most widespread managed pollinator having co-evolved with Australia's food production systems. However, bee populations are under threat. Habitat loss, intensive farming practices and pests and diseases are driving a decline in the number and diversity of bees.
